Finding What Lights You Up

A Solopreneur’s Guide to Building Around Your Passion

Let’s talk about something real for a minute.

You’re thinking about launching your own thing, and that’s exciting. But maybe you’re stuck on that first big question: What should I actually build my business around? You’ve probably seen all those posts about “finding your passion” and thought, “Great advice, but how exactly do I do that?”

Here’s the truth: discovering what genuinely excites you doesn’t have to be some mysterious, complicated journey. You don’t need to meditate on a mountaintop or wait for lightning to strike. Your passion is already there, woven into how you spend your time and what makes you feel alive. You just need to notice it.

The Questions That Unlock Everything

Think of this as detective work, but you’re investigating yourself. The clues are everywhere in your daily life, and all you need to do is pay attention. Grab something to write with because we’re going to explore what really matters to you.

Start by thinking about what you do when work is over. When nobody’s telling you what to do and the day is yours, where does your energy go? Maybe you’re tinkering with websites, cooking elaborate meals, or helping friends solve problems. These aren’t random activities—they’re showing you something important about what engages you naturally.

Now go deeper. What’s that one thing you find yourself doing whenever you get even a sliver of free time? Not what you think you should do, but what you actually want to do. This is gold because passion doesn’t wait for permission. It shows up in those moments when you could be doing anything, and you choose this one thing again and again.

Think about excitement for a moment. What genuinely gets you pumped up? What makes you lose track of time? Often, these are connected to your natural talents and abilities. You feel excited because on some level, you know you’re good at this. It comes easier to you than it does to other people, and that ease creates a positive loop of enthusiasm and capability.

Confidence is another big clue. What activities make you feel capable and sure of yourself? Maybe it’s when you’re explaining something you understand well, or creating something with your hands, or performing for others. When you feel confident, you’re probably operating in an area where you have genuine skill. You don’t second-guess yourself because you know you can do this.

Here’s a powerful question: what would you keep doing even if nobody paid you? This one cuts through all the noise about practicality and money to get at what truly matters to you. Sure, you need to earn a living—we all do. But when you can identify something you’d gladly do for free, you’ve found something authentic. And here’s the beautiful part: businesses built around genuine passion often become sustainable because that authenticity attracts others.

Let’s shift perspective for a moment. If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? Your answer reveals what you care about deeply. Maybe you want to improve access to clean drinking water. Maybe you want to help kids who don’t have the advantages others do. Maybe you’re concerned about animals losing their habitats. Whatever it is, this shows you what problems tug at your heart—and solving problems you care about is one of the most fulfilling ways to build a business.

Pay attention to your free time again, but with fresh eyes. How are you developing yourself when nobody’s watching? Are you writing in a journal, practicing an instrument, working out, learning new skills? These activities reveal what you’re naturally drawn to improve and explore. They’re not obligations—they’re choices that reflect your values and interests.

Finally, think about joy. What puts a genuine smile on your face? And remember, this doesn’t have to be an activity or a thing. Maybe it’s spending time with people you love, or volunteering somewhere that matters to you, or simply being outdoors. Joy is a compass pointing toward what enriches your life.

Connecting the Dots

Now here’s where it gets interesting. Take all these questions and actually write down your answers. Don’t edit yourself or worry about whether something sounds “business-worthy.” Just be honest.

Once you’ve got your answers down, look for patterns. What themes keep appearing? What activities or interests show up multiple times? That repetition is trying to tell you something. It’s showing you where your energy naturally flows, where your talents align with your interests, where you feel most like yourself.

This overlapping area—that’s your passion. It’s not some abstract concept floating out in the universe. It’s right there in your everyday choices and what makes you feel most alive.

Now What?

You might be thinking, “Okay, I’ve figured out my passion. But I’m busy. I’ve got responsibilities. I can’t just drop everything.”

And you’re right—you can’t and shouldn’t. But here’s what you can do: you can start making intentional time for what matters. Even small pockets of time add up when you’re consistent.

Building a startup as a solopreneur is absolutely possible when you’re creating something around your genuine interests. Why? Because you’ll actually want to work on it. You won’t have to force yourself. When challenges come up—and they will—your underlying passion will keep you moving forward instead of giving up.

The key is to stop overthinking this. You don’t need the perfect business plan before you start exploring your passion more seriously. You don’t need to quit your day job tomorrow. You just need to take one small step, then another, then another. Start dedicating regular time to what lights you up. Begin exploring how your passion could solve problems for others. That’s how businesses are born—not from perfect plans, but from taking consistent action around something you genuinely care about.

Your Daily Passion-Tracking Checklist

Use this simple checklist each day to stay connected with your passions and build momentum toward your startup goals. Small daily actions create big transformations over time.

_____ Morning Reflection – Spend 5 minutes writing about what you’re looking forward to today. What aspect of your passion can you explore today, even briefly?

_____ Dedicated Passion Time – Block out at least 15-30 minutes to work on something related to your passion. Protect this time like an important meeting with yourself.

_____ Notice Your Energy – Pay attention during the day to what activities energize you versus drain you. Write down one observation.

_____ Connect with Your Why – Read or think about the change you want to create in the world. How does your passion serve others?

_____ Small Business Action – Take one tiny step toward your startup idea—research, reach out to someone, write down one idea, create something small.

_____ Evening Gratitude – Before bed, note one thing you’re grateful for related to your interests or progress today. Celebrating small wins keeps you motivated.

Remember, your startup journey begins with understanding yourself. The clearer you are about what genuinely excites you, the more authentic and sustainable your business will be. You’ve got this—one day, one action, one step at a time.
